"Too much screen time can have detrimental effects on kids as they grow up, including dulled empathy, difficulty reading social cues and concentrating, disrupted sleep schedules, and even an increased risk of developing a chronic illness — and, yes, digital addiction."

Sheryl Crow's Kids Are Limited To 30 Minutes Of Screen Time A Day & For Good Reason
by Andrea Frazierromper.com, 14 April 2017

She's won nine Grammys and has another album on the way, but, mostly, she's dedicated to being there for every moments of her sons' childhoods. So, it's really no surprise that Sheryl Crow limits her kids' screen time to 30 minutes per day, as she recently told People magazine. Six-year-old and Levi and 9-year-old Wyatt probably aren't bored, though: Crow said she recorded the entirety of Be Myself, out April 21, during their school hours so that she could be home every night for dinner. And no one would argue that playing endless games of Candy Crush is a better way to spend time than hanging out with family (except maybe kids themselves, but still).

If you're finding yourself spending more and more time staring at your phone, that's no accident.

In his new book "Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked," NYU marketing professor Adam Alter warns that internet addiction is on the rise — and that it's partly because addiction is good for business.

He presents some sobering statistics: The average millennial looks at his phone more than 150 times a day, and some studies suggest as much as 40 percent of the population suffers from some kind of Internet addiction, whether to gaming, pornography — or just email.

Google translation with grammatical corrections by the Editor of "Towards Better Health".

Inail ordered to pay an annuity for an occupational disease to the company employee who was diagnosed with a tumor after 15 years of cell phone use for more than three hours a day without protection.

The prolonged and continuous use of the cell phone, without headsets or a hands-free kit, has been recognized by the Ivrea Judge Laura Fadda as a possible cause of the onset of a tumor. The victim, who appealed against Inail [National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work], is a technician in the Turin office of a large Italian telecoms company. His name is Roberto Romeo, 57 years old, and just a few years' short of retirement. The biological damage has been recognized at 23 percent.

Landmark Italian Court Ruling Recognizes Causal Link Between Cellphone Use And Brain Tumor
ehtrust.org, 21 April 2017

The Italian Court of Ivrea rules telecom employee to be paid lifetimes damages for brain tumor developed after heavy cell phone use.

The Italian Court of Ivrea is the first Court in the world to recognize a causal link between cellphone use and brain tumors in an April 11, 2017 ruling which awarded a Telecom employee, Roberto Romeo, lifetime damages of 500 euros a month after he developed a brain tumor from fifteen years of cell phone use. The ruling which has made international headlines as the court’s expert refused to accept telecom industry funded studies as evidence.

“Judgment recognizes the causal link between a Brain tumor and the use of a cell phone”. This is quoted from the verdict issued by Judge Luca Fadda of the Court of Ivrea. The state social security agency must pay Romeo for the damages from the brain tumor which resulted in loss of hearing in one ear. He had used the company cellphone for three hours a day for 15 years.

“I had no choice but to use my mobile to talk to colleagues and organise work — for 15 years I was calling all the time, from home, in the car,” states Romeo as quoted in The Guardian, “I started to have the feeling of my right ear being blocked all the time and the tumour was diagnosed in 2010. Happily, it was benign but I can no longer hear anything because they had to remove my acoustic nerve.”

Today the city of Berkeley won a major decision in a federal appeals court. The court denied a request by the CTIA-The Wireless Association to block Berkeley’s landmark cell phone “right to know” ordinance.

Berkeley’s ordinance which has been in effect since March 21 of last year requires cellphone retailers in the city to provide consumers with the following notification:

“To assure safety, the Federal Government requires that cell phones meet radiofrequency (RF) exposure guidelines. If you carry or use your phone in a pants or shirt pocket or tucked into a bra when the phone is ON and connected to a wireless network, you may exceed the federal guidelines for exposure to RF radiation. Refer to the instructions in your phone or user manual for information about how to use your phone safely.”

9th Circuit: Local law actually “complements and reinforces” federal law, policy.

On Friday, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the City of Berkeley, allowing the city to keep its law that requires radiation warning signs in all cellphone stores within the city limits.

The CTIA, the cellphone industry trade group, sued the city to stop the law from taking effect by asking a lower court to impose a preliminary injunction. The group argued that forcing retailers to display the warning (pictured below) constituted compelled speech, which violates the First Amendment. After the district court didn't impose the injunction, the CTIA appealed to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

The 9th Circuit concluded that Berkeley's disclosure "did no more than alert consumers" to FCC safety disclosures.

American businessman Bill Gates' Microsoft designed some of the world's most exciting technology, but he put strict limits on his own children from using it.

Bill Gates is a visionary who co-founded one of the world's best-known tech companies that made him the richest man in the world.

Gates led the world into the digital world, making computers accessible to everyday people with his Microsoft PC software.

You would think his kids would have been some of the first students at school to show up with cell phones.

Not so. Gates and his wife Melinda banned their three children from owning cell phones until age 14, even though their kids often protested and said their friends all owned them.

MILAN (AP) — A longtime Telecom Italia employee has been awarded monthly social security payments after a court found that his brain tumor was caused by improper use of a company-issued cellphone.

Lawyer Stefano Bertone said Thursday that it was the first trial court verdict of which he was aware in the world “to recognize a link between cellphone use and the development of brain tumor.”

Bertone said one factor that appeared to have contributed to the verdict was the refusal by the court’s expert to accept into evidence studies that were funded by the telecom industry.

MILAN (AP) - A longtime Telecom Italia employee has been awarded monthly social security payments after a court found that his brain tumor was caused by improper use of a company-issued cellphone.

Lawyer Stefano Bertone said Thursday that it was the first trial court verdict of which he was aware “to recognize a link between cellphone use and the development of brain tumor.”

Romeo sued the state social security agency, not Telecom Italia, where he still works.

Under last month’s ruling, Romeo will receive between 6,000 and 7,000 euros ($6,000-$7,500) a year.

Westgate Family Statement – 13th April 2017

"We have a message to the airline industry. The airlines cannot categorically say that air in these aircraft is safe. They refuse to monitor and test for toxins, so of course they have no evidence because they will not look for it! The longer they deny there is a problem, the harder and more costly its going to be when they are proved wrong. Just like the tobacco industry in the fifties refusing to admit smoking causes cancer, the airline industry has its head in the sand. The inconvenient truth for the Airlines is that low doses of toxins in cabin air, over hundreds of hours can hurt some people. The airline industry should be ashamed of itself. My Son suffered so much unnecessarily, and they have done nothing to protect people. The longer you leave it, the harder its going to be, so we just expect those responsible do the right thing."

City of Berkeley becomes the first to require cellphone retailers to display warnings about radiation
If you’re in the market for a cellphone or tablet in the City of Berkeley, you will probably notice a sign displayed near the register of a cellphone retailer, or on store shelves.

It’s a flier alerting customers of possible radiation exposure from mobile devices.

“Berkeley is the first city in the country to get stores to post warnings. It’s a small step, but it’s an important step,” said Joel Moskowitz, PhD, director of UC Berkeley’s Center for Family and Community Health at the University’s School of Public Health.

India: Jadavpur University Researchers Take Up Mobile Radiation Study

Jadavpur University researchers take up mobile radiation study
timesofindia.indiatimes.com, 13 April 2017

KOLKATA: Doctoral students in the electronics department at Jadavpur University have taken up research on cellphone radiation, a field that few dare to tread fearing the powerful cellular lobby.

Academics dealing with electromagnetic radiation have long held the view that intensity of radiation from cellular tow-ers in India needs to be lowered to levels in other developed cou-ntries to reduce potential health hazards. But in the absence of long-term research data, the cellular industry has challenged the arguments and rubbished their claims.

That may well change with PhD students of JU studying various facets of electromagnetic radiation and cell towers. Though most of the studies are at a nascent stage, they have already thrown up some disturbing findings.

A woman is forced to live in a single sealed, toxin-free room and sleep on the bathroom floor as she is allergic to almost everything in the outside world.

Amelia Hill, nicknamed "woman in a bubble", lives as a prisoner in her own Adelaide home and is struggling to survive as her health worsens.

The 41-year-old says she suffers disabling 'allergic' type reactions that can last from hours to weeks ever since she was exposed to termite spray when she was 15 years old.

She says she sometimes experiences 24-hour non-stop loops of 'symptomatic mayhem' that causes her immense physical pain, rashes, fatigue and can leave her unconscious.

Could phones change the way our spines curve?
by Reuters, 15 April 2017

Spine surgeons are noticing an increase in patients with neck and upper back pain, likely related to poor posture during prolonged smartphone use, according to a recent report.

Some patients, particularly young patients who shouldn't yet have back and neck issues, are reporting disk hernias and alignment problems, the study authors write in The Spine Journal.

"In an X-ray, the neck typically curves backward, and what we're seeing is that the curve is being reversed as people look down at their phones for hours each day," said study coauthor Dr. Todd Lanman, a spinal neurosurgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, reports Daily Mail.

"By the time patients get to me, they're already in bad pain and have disc issues," he told Reuters Health.

The Swiss minister for communication says WHO "has never considered mobile antennas as a health risk and there is no indication that this position would evolve in their disfavor".  Dr. Robert Baan, the officer in charge of the 2011 IARC monograph classifying radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as "possibly carcinogenic", has stated that this classification "holds for all types of radiation within the radiofrequency part of the electromagnetic spectrum, including the radiation emitted by base-station antennas, radio/TV towers, radar, Wi-Fi, smart meters, etc."  He adds, "an important point is the radiation level. The exposure from cellular phones (personal exposure) is substantially higher and much more focused (usually on the brain) than exposures from radio/tv towers, antennas, or Wi-Fi."

California: SB18 Bill Will Allow Authorities To Enter Unvaccinated Kids Homes

SB18 Bill Will Allow Authorities To Enter Unvaccinated Kids Homes
by Sean Adl-Tabatabaiyournewswire.com
29 March 2017

California has passed the controversial SB18 bill, allowing state authorities to enter unvaccinated children’s homes in order to assess the child’s safety.

SB18 is a law that forces parents to adhere to and comply with the government’s definition of what is “appropriate” practice when it comes to raising children. Failure to comply with “appropriate” practises, including going against “evidence-based” medical recommendations, can put parents at risk of losing their children.

Healthimpactnews.com reports:

At first blush, the amendments’ defining details of SB18 — which is being pushed by Big Pharma whipping boy Sen. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) — appear altruistic in nature, utilizing language that attempts to swaddle political overreach in soothing terms like “child bill of rights.” However when taking a closer look, the amendments contain strangely redundant policy that seems to be seeking laws for innocuous rights that already exist, which begs the question, what is the real purpose for this legislation?

Green Bank, West Virginia: An American Town Without Wi-Fi or Mobile Phones

An American Town without Wi-Fi or Mobile Phones
learningenglish.voanews.com, 15 April 2017

You might think people all over the United States have wireless internet service and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C.

Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank, which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It also is home to the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world.

There is a ban on Wi-Fi -- wireless internet service -- in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic waves. Officials say the waves could interfere with signals the telescope receives.

For many Americans, a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s. To get there, you must read road signs -- because there is no GPS service in the town. People can connect with the internet through telephones or Ethernet cables, but wireless service is not permitted.

Evaluation of Mobile Phone and Cordless Phone Use and Glioma Risk
Using the Bradford Hill Viewpoints from 1965 on Association or Causation

"The nine Bradford Hill viewpoints on association or causation regarding RF radiation and glioma risk  seem to be fulfilled in this review.

Based on that we conclude that glioma is caused by RF radiation. Revision of current guidelines  for exposure to RF radiation is needed."

This review paper by Michael Carlberg and Lennart Hardell evaluates the strength of the scientific evidence to determine whether there is a causal relationship between a risk factor and an associated disease -- namely, wireless (cellphone and cordless) phone use and glioma, the most common brain cancer. The paper applies the nine perspectives developed by Sir Austin Bradford Hill to the peer-reviewed data pertaining to this health risk.

Health bomb ticks, but experts fail to connect on cancer trigger from electromagnetic fields

by Syed Akbar, TNN, 13 April 2017

HYDERABAD: The Supreme Court's order on closure of a cell phone tower has kicked off a debate among health experts in Hyderabad on the impact of electromagnetic radiation on the health of people, animals and plants. Like their counterparts around the world, city doctors are also divided on whether or not cell phone towers cause cancers and other health issues.

Scientific data on the matter is inconclusive as no fullfledged study -covering a large section of people spread over a vast area -has been conducted. There are a number of research studies, including half a dozen from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but their data is limited to a small area and a small population.

Nevertheless, electromagnetic radiation is known to affect the health of people, animals, birds and even flora. There are also research reports that mobile phones cause more damage to an indi vidual's health than the mobile phone base station. In case of mobile phones the electromagnetic radiation is concentrated on a particular area like the head, chest and waist.

I have exercised caution with other electronics; for example, I am careful with my cellphone and I don’t have a microwave in the home. And yet, I have not ever thought that my WiFi could make me sick.

Health effects of WiFi

WiFi was introduced in 1997 — I remember this well. It is a technology that utilizes radio waves to provide network connectivity. Since it was first introduced, there have been numerous studies conducted that have demonstrated that this amazing innovation could actually be harming overall health — brain health in particular, especially in children. Here are the facts:

Smart meters and cell damage from pulsed em radiation - our health at risk?
by Lynne Wycherley, theecologist.org, 11 April 2017

'Smart meters' looked like a great idea, writes Lynne Wycherley, giving us more control over our energy use. The downside? They emit as many as 14,000 short bursts of intense microwave radiation a day, disrupting cellular electrochemistry and causing health symptoms from migraine to tinnitus, insomnia, dizziness, anxiety, chest pain, palpitations and memory loss. Now a growing number of 'electro-sensitives' have had enough!

As early as 2012, environmental health Professor David Carpenter, founder of Albany School of Public Health, and author of 370 peer-reviewed publications, issued a public letter on the plausible toxic risks of intensive, pulsed-microwave smart metering.

  • A 42-year-old domestic help moved the SC complaining that a BSNL tower illegally installed on a neighbour’s rooftop had exposed him to harmful radiation for 14 yrs.
  • The bench in its order said, “We direct that the particular mobile tower shall be deactivated by BSNL within 7 days from today.”
  • The tower will be the 1st to be closed on an individual’s petition alleging harmful radiation.

NEW DELHI: A 42-year-old domestic help will go down in history as the man who persuaded the Supreme Court to shut down a mobile phone tower on the ground that its electromagnetic radiation+ afflicted him with cancer.

United States: The FCC Is Reversing Its Proposal to Allow Cellphone Use on Planes

The FCC is reversing its proposal to allow cellphone use on planes
by Brian Fung, The Washington Post,
10 April 2017

Federal regulators are withdrawing a proposal that would have allowed air travelers to use their cellphones at high altitude.

The proposal — introduced in 2013 by then-chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Tom Wheeler — sought to roll back a long-standing regulation that banned the use of cellphones on planes over concerns that cellular signals could interfere with pilot radios. New advances in in-flight communications have minimized those concerns, Wheeler argued at the time, a trend that meant the ban could be lifted.

Under the proposal, passengers would still have been required to keep their phones turned off or on airplane mode during takeoff and landing, but they could have switched on their connections at cruising altitude.

Are There Reasons Not To Follow Your Doctor’s Orders?

UPDATED 21 April 2017:  This is an excellent article.  People in the French-speaking part of Switzerland usually follow doctors' orders.  I do not, if I believe it is harming my health. At the end of the article, you will find my comment posted to the People's Pharmacy. There is too much "over-medicalization" and too many "overworked" doctors in Geneva.  The over-prescribing of drugs and procedures is pushing up the cost of medical insurance, a serious issue here.  Many people must now choose between paying their medical insurance premiums or buying food.

See my comment at the end of the article.  NEVER consult the specialist mentioned!  His treatment cost $1,000, of which 20% paid out of pocket and which made me very sick. The experience has been reported to the consumer groups in Geneva.  Who is keeping an eye on medical practice?!

Are There Reasons Not To Follow Your Doctor’s Orders?

by Joe Graedon, The People’s Pharmacy, 10 April 2017

Should you always follow doctor's orders? What if you don't tolerate a statin or start coughing on a blood pressure medicine? Are you noncompliant or smart?

The phrase “doctor’s orders” often means doing something because a physician says to do it. These days that usually that means swallow a certain pill.

Everyone is Doing it: Injecting Micro-Chips: The CIA Likes This Plan

The CIA likes this plan:  "All  new online devices are a treasure trove of data if you’re a “person of interest” to the spy community... With the rise of the “smart home,” you’d be sending tagged, geolocated data that a spy agency can intercept in real time when you use the lighting app on your phone to adjust your living room’s ambiance.  “Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters...

"It is actually too bad that we don’t get to enjoy any cool technology because we know the government is just going to exploit it to spy on us."

Everyone is Doing it: Injecting Micro-Chips is Cool!

by The Daily Bell Staff , 10 April 2017

The government isn’t quite ready to force microchip injections on citizens. But if you want to do it on your own, it just makes tracking you and your data that much easier!

You can be just like the cool kids who are having microchips injected in their hands in order to open locked doors and store payment information. A wave of the hand is all it will take to start your car, buy a latte, or share all your data with governments and corporations.

Good morning.

It’s sprayed on home gardens, Little League Baseball fields and, most heavily, the corn, soybean and other crops of the Central Valley.

More than 10 million pounds of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the weedkiller Roundup, are applied in California each year, according to government figures.

Now, after a yearlong legal battle, California’s environmental health agency has announced that it will list it as a known carcinogen.

What Is "Brain Hacking"? Tech Insiders on Why You Should Care

What you do is you make it so when someone pulls a lever, sometimes they get a reward, an exciting reward. And it turns out that this design technique can be embedded inside of all these products."

Internet of Things security: What happens when every device is smart and you don't even know it?
by Danny Palmerzdnet.com, 20 March 2017

When IoT devices are everywhere, the security headaches just get worse.

Billions more everyday items are set to be connected to the internet in the next few years, especially as chips get cheaper and cheaper to produce -- and crucially, small enough to fit into even the smallest product.

Potentially, any standard household item could become connected to the internet, even if there's no reason for the manufacturers to do so.

Eventually that processors needed to power an IoT device will become effectively free, making it possible to turn anything into a internet-enabled device.

The Smartphone Is Eventually Going to Die

The smartphone is eventually going to die, and then things are going to get really crazy
by Matt Weinbergeruk.businessinsider.com,

One day, not too soon — but still sooner than you think — the smartphone will all but vanish, the way beepers and fax machines did before it.

Make no mistake: We're still probably at least a decade away from any kind of meaningful shift away from the smartphone. (And if we're all cyborgs by 2027, I'll happily eat my words. Assuming we're still eating at all, I guess.)

Yet, piece by piece, the groundwork for the eventual demise of the smartphone is being laid by Elon Musk, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, and a countless number of startups that still have a part to play.

And, let me tell you: If and when the smartphone does die, that's when things are going to get really weird for everybody. Not just in terms of individual products but in terms of how we actually live our everyday lives and maybe our humanity itself.

Technology Is a Marvel - Now Let's Make It Moral

Technology is a marvel – now let’s make it moral
by Martha Lane Fox, Opinion, The Guardian,

If Britain is bold after Brexit, we can lead the way in demanding more control over our digital destiny

Countless decisions must soon be made about how Britain navigates the world, having cut itself adrift from the European Union. And alongside the obvious things like trade deals and immigration rules, we ought too to make choices about who and how we want to be as a society. What is Britain in the 21st century? What do we value? What do we fight for?

The RSI and Overuse Injury Association of ACT raises device concerns

Increasing numbers of Canberra parents are reaching out for help with their child's neck, back and arm pain as more schools implement "bring your own device" policies.

The RSI and Overuse Injury Association of the ACT has raised concerns about how the use of iPads and laptops in classrooms could impact on mental and physical health.

Association director Ann Thomson said more parents were getting in contact with the organisation for help addressing their teenagers' injuries.

"We're concerned about the use of notebooks and iPads in schools because of the lack of adjustability and a separate keyboard and mouse, and also the fact that child is holding them with one hand while using them with the other, so that's placing a lot of strain on the arms, neck and hands," she said.

Report warns of catastrophic consequences and blames manufacturers for ‘systematic denial of harms’ and ‘unethical marketing tactics’

The idea that pesticides are essential to feed a fast-growing global population is a myth, according to UN food and pollution experts.

A new report, being presented to the UN human rights council on Wednesday, is severely critical of the global corporations that manufacture pesticides, accusing them of the “systematic denial of harms”, “aggressive, unethical marketing tactics” and heavy lobbying of governments which has “obstructed reforms and paralysed global pesticide restrictions”.

What Is Lost in Adopting Technology

Just as a fish that is born in a polluted stream would never consider that water could be any different, our young people today are born into a techno-dependent world, without realising what has been lost in the process of adopting technology.

Many of us are familiar with some of the effects of modern technology:

Dangers of Wireless Radiation Addressed in five Mass. Bills
by Jack O'Dwyerodwyerpr.com, 7 April 2017

Massachusetts legislators have introduced five bills this session to address public exposure to wireless radiation.

Scientific literature has proven that exposure to wireless radiation is responsible for numerous medical symptoms and conditions,” said Lisa Lavine Nagy, M.D., government liaison for the Academy of Environmental Medicine.

A landmark study by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) has proven that DNA damage as well as brain and heart tumors develop in mice exposed to cell phone radiation, she said. Other studies report lowered sperm count in men as well as damage to the fetal brain when a pregnant woman uses the cell phone.

Dr. Martha Herbert, specialist in pediatric neurology and a leading autism researcher at Harvard has observed links between wireless radiation exposure and autism.

Canadians Await Government Action As Cancer Connections Strengthen

Edmonton neuro-oncologist Dr. Jacob Easaw confirmed,
"Younger patients with brain tumors are presenting more
frequently to my clinics.  One possible explanation is the
use of cell phones."
For Immediate Release

Ottawa – A CBC investigation revealed that cell phones exceed maximum permitted exposures during normal use, and expose Canadians to three to four times more radiofrequency energy than measured during testing per regulations. Since 81% of Canadians are unaware of fine print warnings in the phone or manual, they naturally hold cell phones against ears and carry phones in pockets. Few people distance wireless devices from the body by at least 5 to 20 mm for phones and 20+ cm for tablets.

In response to CBC, the federal government alleges that phones are still “safe” when exposure standards are exceeded.
